You can receive "XADM: Error- 528" error when you start Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.


The error code is followed by the following message:


"The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service returned service specific error 4294966768"


After the error message, following entries are written in the Windows NT Application Log:

Description: Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.


Error- 528.

This critical error message can't let you open the mailbox and public folder and access the data from the Exchange Server database.

 

Cause

Error -528 corresponds to the JET_ErrMissingLogFile. This error message is received when the Edb.chk and Edb.log files of the Exchange Server are missing. These files are stored in the Exchsrvr\Mdbdata directory.

  • Edb.log is a transaction log file. Any changes made to the database objects in the Active Directory are stored in this file. During lulls in CPU activity, the database engine entrusts the transactions into the major Ntds.dit database. It ensures that the database could be retrieved in case of system crash. But corruption in this file can create grave situations as the corrupted database can't be retrieved.

  • Edb.chk is a checkpoint file of Exchange Server database. It is used by the transaction log to mark the point at which the updates are transferred from the log files to Ntds.dit. As the transactions are committed, the checkpoint moves forward in the Edb.chk file. In case of system failure, the pointer tells how far along a given set of entrusts had progressed before termination. If this file is damaged, system can't identify the transaction progress and will fail to restore.
